Breadline Africa
When a child’s imagination is unlocked, possibilities are opened up, allowing them to choose a path for their own future. Breadline Africa enables this journey by providing infrastructure and initiatives to support childhood development in Southern Africa through early childhood education.
WHAT THEY DO:
Create Infrastructure
Breadline Africa’s goal is to help children do better in school by ensuring that they have safer spaces to learn in. It’s difficult to focus on learning when the roof is leaking and the temperatures drop in winter. Teachers also struggle to help their charges when they are worried about the children hurting themselves on a broken board or rusty nail. Many units that Breadline Africa replaces are unsafe and cramped – hot in summer and cold in winter.
Run Initiatives
We know that children’s horizons are broadened by new experiences, and so annually, Bread Line Africa sends hundreds of children under the age of seven to a magical day at the seaside. Although so many of these youngsters grow up within a couple of kilometres of the ocean, for many of them, this is the first time that they see waves breaking on the beach and have the opportunity to build sandcastles. This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop a love and joy for the ocean and also to learn about the environment around them and how to preserve it through play.
Feeding Programs
Since the announcement of lockdown, Breadline Africa immediately focused all efforts toward emergency feeding programmes in poor communities to alleviate hunger. Through pre-school meals, food parcel distribution and community kitchens, we have provided over 4 million meals.
In their core work of placing educational infrastructure in disadvantaged communities across the country, Bread Line Africa encounter children whose families clearly struggle to make ends meet. And some months are more difficult than others. Providing food parcels to communities in need during these times has been an important initiative for Breadline Africa since its inception nearly 30 years ago.
